S:C will return this weekend sometime after all...YAY!

Well, everyone, it looks like Kim is in the clear again. She's probably getting out of the hospital today, so if she does get out, we MIGHT just have the Rising Stars show for the fourth after all...depends on how she feels, and how hot it gets in the studio. But if not, it should be ready for the usual slot on Sunday.

It might sound a bit weird though...i've come down with a really awful cold, and it sounds like it. I sound worse than I feel, though, so at least that's something.

So come hell or highwater, it looks like S:C will be back this weekend! YAY!

Subject:CINEMA is on a forced hiatus...

The rising stars will just have to hold their horses...and i'm sorry to have to announce that Subject:CINEMA is on a hopefully short but indefinate hiatus, due to the fact that one of the hosts is AWOL again...

After two weeks of clear sailing, after her last hospital stay, Kim got sick again last night, and was readmitted to the hospital this morning.  They have already taken new X-rays and an ultrasound, and will be doing another CT Scan this evening.

I am still of the believe that her recurring condition is being brought on by one of her medications, but no one will listen to me, even though she's showing all the symptoms of severe side effects for this drug, a blood pressure medication called Benicar HCL.

Needless to say she was pretty upset that she got sick again, and it hit suddenly. She had been fine up until Sunday, when her sinuses started to bother her, which was the first sign last time as well. Then yesterday, she trooped through work without a problem except she said she was getting the pain back in her stomach - it's like a muscle pain, a constant burning in the muscles in front of her stomach. Then late last night, the vomiting began - slowly, just once before bed, and then it really hit her bad this morning, and so we took her back to the ER.

The thing she's really pissed about is that the bruises from the IV tubes and blood tests from the first go round just healed..and she's not wanting more...

Anyway, thanks for your understanding. I know from your letters of support that you all understand, and that we'll be back as soon as we possibly can. I'll also see what I can do in the interim as fill in until she gets back.

Thanks so much for your time!

Rising Stars schedule change - it's now a 4th of July tradition...(ahem, see below...)

You know, sometimes things just get you to the point where you want to throw the computer out the window...or in this case, adjoining electronics...

Our mic preamp went belly up, probably due to the heat, and we were just beginning to record this week's show. I've already ordered a replacement, but it won't be here until Tuesday at the earliest. So we've decided to revamp our schedule a bit, since we can't record a lick on mics until the new preamp gets here.

So we're gonna start a new tradition- beginning this year, and continuing on each year, the annual To Rise And Fall In L.A. Rising Stars list will be announced at 12 noon every year on July 4.  We're gonna make it our Independence Day tradition.

So although Subject:CINEMA will not be around until next Friday - thankfully next week's Daily Call shows were recorded this morning, before the preamp blew (and probably the reason WHY it blew) - you can look forward to our annual hoilday special, and we'll have 20 fantastic names to announce this coming Friday...and then our regular show next Sunday as well...

As the week goes on, i'll have a few other tidbits in the blog, and maybe I can concentrate a little bit on the PNR Connection stuff too...

We'll see you Friday with Subject:CINEMA #119 - To Rise And Fall In L.A. III - the 3rd annual Popcorn N Roses Rising Stars list 2008!

Cheers, and thanks as always for your patience, understanding, and loyal listenership!

Subject:CINEMA #118 - "Into The Sunn....Classic Pictures!"

TC and Kim take on the schlocky, take-themselves-too-seriously films of the studio which brought you "The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams" and "Hangar 18" and more!

Plus, this week's HUGE E-mail segment, the latest news on the Callback, a great Bonehead Of the Week, coverage of the opener in 2008's edition of the AST Dew Action Sports Tour, and a look at this year's AFI list, the Ten Top Ten!

Next Week - it's the list that a ton of movie fandom sites around the world have been keeping an eye on, because our track record has been pretty damn good, and we're out to do it again...it's the third annual edition of "To Rise And Fall In L.A.", as PNR names it's Top 20 Rising Stars for 2008!  DON'TCHA DARE MISS IT!!!

OTHER NOTES:

I searched and searched but could not find clips of the 70s TV commercials for the games mentioned in segment three, "The Sinking Of The Titanic" and "The Bermuda Triangle". However, I DID find links to information on both games, courtesy of BoardGameGeek and the excellent site over there!

The Bermuda Triangle
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2296

The Sinking Of The Titanic
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2249

I was mostly correct in thinking they were both Milton-Bradley games. MB distributed "Titanic" after Ideal was bought out by MB in the late 70s. Neither game is still on the market (duh!) and they fetch average prices on EBay - "Bermuda Triangle" runs anywhere from $15-$30 depending on the condition, while "Sinking Of The Titanic" nets considerably more, running $25 to $100 depending on the seller. Wow!

If anyone can find clips of the commericals from these games, let me know, and i'll post them later!

Next week, as I said above, it's the third annual "To Rise And Fall In L.A." Rising Stars list, all new for 2008! DONT'CHA DARE MISS IT!

Subject:CINEMA #117 - "State Of Independence, Part Two - Indie Film Spotlight"

TC and Kim (she's back, yay!) continue their look at independent films and the state of the independent industry.

On the second part of State Of Independence, TC speaks with some of the people involved with a closely watched indie film called Still Green - writer/producer Georgia Menides, producer Doug Lloyd, and the filmmaker behind the documentary Making Still Green, Steven Petty. You can catch Making Still Green now in weekly segments on Film Threat's website at http://filmthreat.com.

Also check out the film site at http://stillgreenmovie.com and Steven's documentary at http://makingstillgreen.com.

And since she's back, Kim talks about what has been plaguing her for the past couple months, and how it landed her in the hospital for a week, and also chats about some of her favorite indie films. Plus, a trip into the Wayback machine for the original review of Still Green!

Coming this weekend: "Into the Sunn....Classic Pictures, That Is!" See you then! And don't forget, we're only ONE WEEK AWAY from PNR's 3rd annual Rising Stars show, "To Rise And Fall In L.A. III"!

Our scheduled interview with IFS and ProMedia's Larry Richman will appear in a future podcast - sorry for the delay!

June 15, 2008

Subject:CINEMA #116 - "State Of Independence, Part One - Indie Film Spotlight"

TC (sans Kim) explores the current world of indie film in the first of a HUGE two part special focus on PNR's website, Indie Film Spotlight.

This is the BIGGEST Show we've ever done, with a look at how indie films are made, what goes into them, how they're written and much more.

Joining TC this week are two very special guests: Michael Colford, the founder and president of Boston's Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film, and the writer, producer, and director of the quirky indie comedy Once Upon A Film, Decker.

Also, TC discusses his own view of indie films, what some of his favorite indies are (betcha you can just GUESS which movies he's going to talk about, heh heh heh) and Wayback reviews of Once Upon A Film and Paranoid Park!

On the second part of State Of Independence this Thursday, TC will speak with some of the people involved with a closely watched indie film called Still Green - writer/producer Georgia Menides, producer Doug Lloyd, and the filmmaker behind the documentary Making Still Green, Steven Petty. You can catch Making Still Green now in weekly segments on Film Threat's website at http://filmthreat.com.

Don't forget to join us Thursday for part two of State of Independence, where we'll also speak with one of todays top indie blog writers, Larry Richman!

PERSONAL STUFF...

This week has been one of the most gut-wrenching weeks i've ever lived through - Kim has been hospitalized since last Tuesday with what appears to be an unknown stomach ailment. As she is a type 2 diabetic, they've had to take extra care to find out what's wrong. She is having a stomach scope tomorrow to try and see what the problem is, and there's a good chance she'll be there for the better part of another week at least, depending on what they find out.

It has been a godsend to have this show to work on because it helped me keep my mind off of what has been going on, because she's had both good days and bad, and a couple of times when we went to see her she was virtually comatose, or seemed like it - she could really hear everything, but was too medicated to respond.

I spoke with her yesterday - the first day I was unable to visit because my rides were busy elsewhere - and also her nurse. She's finally able to keep some food down, and that's definately a step in the right direction. I was sitting in the living room last night trying to get our worthless DVD player to work on the Brick dvd when she called me out of the blue and sounded better than she has in almost a week - back to her irasible self, drugs out of her system, bored out of her skull, and finally asking for her puzzle books and her latest mystery novel. YAY!  You have NO Idea how much that bounced me up because when Stacy, Jenn, and I went to see her on Friday she was back to being unresponsive after being fairly awake on Thursday.

Spending this week alone has been very trying, and with her condition going back and forth, i've had very little good sleep - Kim is EVERYTHING to me, and not having her here has made me realize that I would HATE living alone...but last night, I slept VERY well...that call was a real boost. Hosting the show alone was another matter - without her to play off of, I hope you won't be too bored as I ramble on about indie films...

I can't say how she is today yet, as I usually wait until around noon to call in and check with the nurses about her condition. And we're going to see her today also.

Your letters of support and encouragement have also been an element of what's kept me going this week, and for that I am FOREVER grateful.

Thanks to everyone whom I interviewed this past week and who knew what was going on - Decker, Georgia, Doug, Steve, and Michael - they were incredibly patient and understanding when I had to reschedule a few things this week.

Thanks again to everyone who listen to the show, who read the various websites regularly, and know that without you guys and the sites, I would be going stark raving CRAZEE this week....

Don't miss part two of State Of Independence on Thursday...and watch for a brand new VIDEO REVUE from Monica and Johnny Swanson sometime in the next day or so!

Just a quick note...

...to let everyone know that this week's Subject:CINEMA will appear sometime this evening. We were unable to finish recording it yesterday due to some thunderstorms in the area and the fact that we had a previous committment last evening.

We're shooting for 6 PM, so hopefully it will be up at that time, if not keep checking, it will be up later in the evening!

Thanks,

TC

Latest S:C Update - Made May to run final two episodes on Sunday, Wednesday

Still trying to allow time for Kim's illness to run it's course. Her voice is very scratchy now, but hopefully we'll be back in place for this Sunday's edition of Subject:CINEMA.

The final episode of Made May will air Wednesday, May 28.

This new schedule supersedes plans to do two shows this weekend, because we just are not going to be able to make time for both shows.

Thanks for your continued patience and understanding as we get near the end of Kim's illness and prepare to get her feeling better as the summer goes along!

May 21, 2008

"Daily Call" taking this week off, will return Memorial Day

Due to circumstances beyond our control, and Kim's ongoing illness, Daily Call is taking this week off. Things have been crazee around here, and we would rather take the time off to get things together rather than produce a show that isn't up to our usual standards.

Daily Call will return next Monday, May 26.

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

TC

NO S:C This Sunday...

Sorry to be so late in announcing it, but there will NOT be a new S:C this weekend - Kim spent 5 hours at the ER yesterday getting two saline and one anti-nausea I.V.s...obviously, her illness is still ongoing, and we're still trying to discover exactly what is going on with her.

As a result, we have cut the last planned episode of Made May, the Godfather Saga, and will reschedule it sometime this fall. Which is good, because i'm so backed up on indie screeners and the new Cheese And Whine boxsets we got last week that I don't have time to catch the whole trilogy right now..

Thanks for your patience and understanding about what has been a very frustrating two months for us. Hopefully we'll get this under control soon, and find out what's wrong and get her back on her feet 100%!

Watch for the final two Made May shows in a double shot next Saturday and Sunday!

May 11, 2008

Then, TC addresses the film community about what being a podcaster means to him, and why Speed Racer had an effect on the conclusions he came to...

Be forewarned - although not profanity laced, TC and Kim do drop the S word several times during the last hour...sorry if we offended anyone!

See you next week for the next installment of Made May, and throughout the week with columns and such!

May 04, 2008

Subject:CINEMA #110 - "Hollywood Vs The Mob: Real Life vs REEL Life!"

Subject:CINEMA #109 - "Independent Film Festival Of Boston Wrap up"

This week, we go inside the Independent Film Festival Of Boston...or try to, anyway...

You See, we both got sick and we couldn't attend as many films as we wanted to, but we still got to see some of them, thanks to the generosity of the filmmakers...

So this show is dedicated to the films we saw, and a great concert too...reviews of WE ARE WIZARDS, CRAWFORD, and THE GREENING OF SOUTHIE...plus complete coverage of the fantastic WizardRock concert.

Plus a segment on the recent Brattle Theater series of Nikkatsu films, email, and a few other odds and ends.

Don't forget the beginning of Made May, which starts TOMORROW with "Hollywood Vs The Mob - Real Life vs Reel Life". Full notes and photos for this show will also be up by tomorrow as well, with TONS of links to the filmmakers, the stars of the movies, and more!

See you TOMOROW!

April 24, 2008

OK, so we couldn't even make THIS date, heh heh heh

With regrets, I must inform our loyal listeners that the planned Thursday edition of Subject:CINEMA is just not going to come off.

Kim is still having problems with her illness, and between that and our hectic schedule with a film series at the Brattle and the beginning of the Independent Film Festival of Boston this week, we had no time to get things ready. So due to our overly full schedule these past two weeks, we're going to have to postpone the Auto Racing show indefinately, and we may scrap the Horse Racing show with it, since they were planned to compliment each other.

We'll make a final decision on these two planned Thursday shows and let everyone know about it sometime in the next day or so. Watch the calendar area of the site for changes as we finalize what we're doing. What we will probably do is postpone the racing shows until later in the year, and move our special on the IFFB from next Wednesday to next Thursday.

We WILL DEFINATELY have this Sunday's edition of Subject:CINEMA, our annual Summer Blockbuster preview show, ready ON TIME. It will also be filled with a TON more stuff that we plan to bring you, including coverage of the recent Japanese film series at Cambridge's Brattle Theater, some coverage of the IFFBoston, and reviews for at least one movie, The Forbidden Kingdom, and possibly one or two others.

We would rather scrap a show when we don't have time to properly pull it off than bring you a substandard edition of the show, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Keep watching PNR for continuing coverage of the IFFBoston in the days ahead!

April 13, 2008

Subject:CINEMA #107 - "Directors' Chair: Close Encounters Of The Spielberg Kind"

TC and Kim take a look at the career of Steven Spielberg!

We touch on every film that Mr Spielberg has directed over the course of his career, as well as his early television work. Plus, all the usual fun stuff - The Callback, The Bonehead of the Week, Dancing With The Stars coverage, and a dip into the E-mail Bag!

Don't forget - Subject:CINEMA's Reel LIVE! This evening at 6:00 PM ET from BlogTalkRadio.com! You can get the call-in number by clicking the "Reel LIVE!" Button on the sidebar!

Next week - two shows about racing - cars and horses!

See you then!
