Mystery March

March 31, 2007

Subject:CINEMA #45 - Directors' Chair #3 - Good EEEEVENING! The Films of Alfred Hitchcock

This week, we salute one of filmdom's greatest...the legendary Alfred Hitchcock. We've been trying to do this one for almost six months, and if I say so myself, I think it's turned out to be one of the best shows we've ever done. Because of time constraints, we are only doing six of our favorite films by Hitch, but we think you'll like what we've done...

THE SHOW (Times may be slightly off due to Podshow insertions):
Segment 1 (1:30) - An overview of Hitch's remarkable career as well as his personal life
Segment 2 (18:57) - Rebecca; North By Northwest
Segment 3 (35:49) - Rear Window; The Birds
Segment 4 (55:20) - The usual stuff, this weeks' trivia contest, e-mail, Bonehead of the Week
Between segments 4 and 5 (1:15:35) - guest movie reviewer Rob CollIer reviews "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"
Segment 5 (1:19:00) - Psycho ; Family Plot

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

Welcome to our new listeners! Whereever you've come from, we're glad to see you!  Please drop a line and introduce yourselves.

Speaking of which...e-mail, voice mail, and hotline calls are how we keep in touch with our listeners. Our e-mail segments are always fun to do, but we can't do them if you don't write!  So if you want to hear your name on the air, you have to do your part too...heh heh heh...

Thanks to "The Pit" for the great Hitchcock sound clips!  They have a wonderful horror wav file archive, and it was most useful in our production this week!

Quick note - I missed a goof in segment one - it's about 5 seconds long, and it's me asking Kim to redo one of her statements - sorry I missed it, but sometimes, these little things happen...I'll be more careful next time, I promise....DON'T HURT ME!!! :-)

Just for s**ts and giggles, don't forget to support our choice of champion for Dancing With The Stars, Apolo Anton Ohno. You can vote 10 times per phone line, as well as 10 more times online, each Monday evening (calls) or all day Tuesday (online). Apolo's vote number is 1-800-868-3411 and votes are free! The phone line is open in your timezone from the beginning of the show until 30 minutes after the conclusion...

We'll have a TON of Hitchcock movies in our new SuperStore, which will debut in about two weeks. And don't forget the upcoming swag shop either. Both will debut around April 15 or so. And don't forget that within the next few days, Popcorn N Roses and Subject:CINEMA will be MERGING into one site, featuring more great stuff than ever before!

NEXT WEEK: Here's The Easter Rabbit, Hooray!

For Subject:CINEMA, I'm TC Kirkham. Be There. Aloha.

Subject:CINEMA #44 - SuperSleuths Of The Small Screen

Sorry for the day's delay on this week's show, but something came up...

Mystery March continues with a look at the detectives and cops of the small screen (yes, we know that show is called Subject:CINEMA, but TV plays an important part in mysteries...we'll be back to cinema stuff next week, don't worry...)

THE SHOW (times may be off due to Podshow inserts):

Segment 1 (1:30) - The NBC Mystery Movie - Columbo, McMillan And Wife, McCloud, McCoy, Hec Ramsey, McCoy, Quincy M.E., Banacek, Cool Millions, The Snoop Sisters; Hetty Wainthrop Investigates; Mrs. Bradley Mysteries; Mystery!; Charters And Caldicott

Segment 2 (18:18) - The Whodunit shows - Murder She Wrote; Campion; off on a Doctor Who tangent; Ellery Queen and the breaking of the fourth wall; Perry Mason and his amazing record; The New Perry Mason and how it bombed; Whodunit?; Cluedo; Murder In Small Town X

Segment 3 (40:01) - Quirky detectives and cops - The Dead Zone; Medium; Psych; Monk; Longstreet; Matt Houston and Kim's definition of a "quirky opening" (hoo boy); Nero Wolfe; Parodies - Police Squad; Sledge Hammer; Murder By Death; Murder Can Hurt You

Segment 4 (58:00) - The usual stuff - Bum Rush The Charts update, Marquee Mix, more on our other shows, E-Mail, Trivia Challenge winner and new question; Bonehead of the Week; and, oh yeah, it's all about Apolo Anton Ohno on Dancing With The Stars this season...don't forget to vote!

Segment 5 (1:16:39) - Cop Shows - CSI:Crime Scene Investigation; CSI:Miami; CSI:New York; Dexter; Law & Order; Law & Order:Criminal Intent; Law & Order:Special Victims Unit; Law & Order:Trial By Jury; a goofy story about one of TC's favorite young actors, Luther Creek; the "ripped from the headlines" aspect of Law & Order; Hawaii Five-0; Dragnet (1967 version); the ill-fated Dragnet revivals and movie; Adam-12; and oh, yeah, Tuesday is Happy Feet day...

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

The ABC Mystery Movie, mentioned in the first segment, was made up of, in addition to new Columbo movies with Peter Falk, new Kojak movies with Telly Savalas, and two new elements, Gideon Oliver with Lou Gossett, and B.L. Striker starring Burt Reynolds.

For information on the UK series, Cluedo, based on the board game Clue, check out this IMDB entry - if this is out in the US on DVD, and someone knows where we can get it, please LET US KNOW!

For more information on the life and tragic death of the winner of Fox TV's Murder In Small Town X, Angel Juarbe Jr, click here and here; because of the show, we both felt like we sort-of knew him (in that TV sort of way) and thus had a personal stake in the disasters of 9/11. Gracias, Amigo...you and your brethren will NEVER be forgotten....

Also, I'm A FIRST CLASS IDIOT... I guess we should have given ME the "Bonehead Of The Week" award...I have been giving the new toll-free hotline WRONG on my readings of it now and the past several shows...it's 1-888-214-9311, NOT 243 as i've been saying, I don't know how that bonehead mistake got by me for three friggin' weeks....sorry....

CLIP OF THE WEEK!

We managed to find that clip of Vincent Price explaining cricket on You Tube again, so here it is. It's actually from Charters and Caldicott, and NOT Mystery!, as Kim had thought...ENJOY!

NEXT WEEK: "Good EEEEEEvening! The Films of Alfred Hitchcock...be there....

Subject:CINEMA #43 - There Is Nothing Like THE Dame...Agatha Christie In The Movies (and tv...)

Hoo boy, was this one fun! We're both HUGE Agatha Christie fans, and this was a show we've been looking forward to for a while. We go indepth about the TV and Movie adaptations of Dame Christie's work.

THE SHOW (times may be slightly off due to Podshow insertions):

Segment 1 (1:30) - An overview of Dame Agatha Christie's work; Partners In Crime
Segment 2 (19:00) - The fastidious Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot
Segment 3 (39:00) - A trip to Saint Mary Meade with Miss Jane Marple
Segment 4 (1:00:18) - upcoming mystery show; Marquee Mix changes that didn't happen due to the CRB Decision; Save Internet Radio; PodRadioK; Platinum Rose's Garden; Bum Rush The Charts; Toll Free Number; Donations; Callback; Forum; Podlinez number; comments to I-Tunes, PodCast Alley, Digg.com; prizes have BEEN SENT! (yay!); note to Mark Shields; E-mail - actually a voice mail (yay again!); Trivia Challenge;  Bonehead of the Week
Segment 5 (1:18:53) - Two Christie stories that have been filmed multiple times - Witness For The Prosecution and And Then There Were None/Ten Little Indians

THIS WEEKS NOTES:

This show was a bit crazy, due to the fact that I badly sliced my left index finger open earlier in the day. It feels better today, and I'm actually able to use it to type a bit...so it must be healing...

Near the tail end of segment two, someone blasted a horn outside our window...it picked up on the recording, and I couldn't edit it out, so I left it, and my reaction, in...which leads to...

This weeks' Editing Room Treasure is the longest one we've aired so far...almost three minutes long...but it's worth it, IMHO. The first quickie is Kim having a momentary brain cramp about our e-mail address; the second is a longer clip that comes from the Noir show...Kim inadvertently substituted another Barbara's last name for Barbara Stanwyck's name at the beginning of segment two, and I lost it...and then came down with a HUGE case of the giggles...every time Kim said the words "Double Indemnity", I cracked up...it took us FOUR TAKES to get through the beginning of this segment, and by the end of it, Kim was getting a bit PO'ed, and it shows...but I couldn't help myself...it's one of those times where a word or phrase just sets you off and you can't stop yourself...

The movie where british actor David Suchet has hair isn't an indie film as I mentioned during segment two; it was actually the Albert Brooks movie The In-Laws...you can see a photo of Suchet with hair here.

I mentioned a bit about Marquee Mix during segment four and why the new version and site haven't debuted yet. Please listen and support internet radio. For full information on the impending doom of ALL internet radio, check out Radio And Internet Newsletter, which covers it in-depth, and also provides many links of sites where you can help us out. It's an important issue, and we need EVERYONE'S HELP to take a stand and survive as webcasters.

About BUM RUSH THE CHARTS...this campaign is EXTREMELY important to me and to the podcasting world in general. It takes place THIS THURSDAY, March 22.  If you value the future of music podcasting, please take the time to click the link at the top of the right sidebar and check it out. We need EVERYONE to take part in this because it's so important to the future of the entire music and podcasting industries. Please take the time to check it out.

Also, we're still in need of more Podtrac surveys to be done. We haven't reached that golden 20 surveys yet, and they won't even begin to submit us to advertisers until we reach that number, so if you haven't done it yet, PLEASE take the time out to do so. We need to start earning some funds from advertising, or from more donations, in order to continue to move to the next phase of growth. The last thing we want to do is stagnate, and there's SO MUCH we want to do to help improve our show and make it better. So please help us out, ok?

THIS WEEK'S TRAILER:

March 14, 2007

Subject:CINEMA #42 - Dark As Night: Film Noir

We're back with our Wednesday edition for March, as we continue Mystery March with a look at Film Noir - classic Noir, neo-Noir, and what Kim has coined hyper-Noir.

THE SHOW (times may be approximate due to Podshow insertions):
Segment 1 (1:30)- Thank yous; What is Film Noir?; The Maltese Falcon
Segment 2 (19:30) - Double Indemnity; Sunset Boulevard; Columbo; Elevator To The Gallows; Hamlet as noir; Onibaba
Segment 3 (35:50) - Noir Parodies; Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid; The Naked Gun movies; Guy Noir (A Prairie Home Companion); WonderMan; My Favorite Brunette; Taxi Driver (!?!); Lady From Sockholm (and yes it IS spelled right...)
Segment 4 (51:01)- Hyper Noir; Lucky Number Slevin, Brick, Run Lola Run

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

We inadvertently got a bit "risque" but I'm supposing that everyone who listens to the show can handle the world s**t without it being considered "explicit", as Kim used the term "bats**t" to describe something...

In segment 3, Kim said something that triggered an inside joke on our part concerning eldest Hanson brother Ike; you'll get the reference if you've taken my heartfelt advice on a couple of earlier shows and checked out the Hanson documentary Strong Enough To Break ; if not, WHY THE HELL NOT?  Go to I-Tunes THIS VERY MINUTE and download the documentary...otherwise, you'll be in the dark as to why I did what I did, and why we thought it was funny...

This show produced enough bloopers to keep us supplied for several weeks, which I'm glad about because my supply was dwindling down...they'll start showing up with Saturday's show...heh heh heh...

Subject:CINEMA #41 - Elementary! Sherlock Holmes At The Movies

Kicking off our Mystery March, Kim and I decided to tackle the topic of Sherlock Holmes. WOW! That's all I can say. The number of people who have played the role is staggering, and not always good, sometimes it just seems a bit crazy for a particular actor to have played the role...

THE SHOW (Times may be slightly off due to Podshow insertions):

SEGMENT 1 (1:30) - Background of Sherlock Holmes; the character itself; Holmes' relationship with the police; Irene Adler
SEGMENT 2 (17:45) - The actors who have played Holmes; different versions of the character; Basil Rathbone vs Jeremy Brett; the jarring issue of Holmes in the modern day adventures
SEGMENT 3 (36:13) - Clarification from segment 2 about the Ronald Howard tv series version; the variations of Holmes - The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes In The 22nd Century, Young Sherlock Holmes, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother; Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of Holmes; Holmes and drug usage; Holmes and Star Trek:The Next Generation
SEGMENT 4 (50:30) - Marquee Mix relaunch delayed due to Live365 maintenence; PodRadioK and Platinum Rose's Garden; our brand new TOLL FREE hotline number, The Callback; TC's lazyness when getting the prizes mailed; Frappr Map; Forum; new store and swagshop coming soon; Podlinez; ITunes and Podcast Alley; Zencast; Donations; E-Mail; Trivia Challenge; Bonehead Of The Week; Bum Rush The Charts campaign
SEGMENT 5 (1:09:21) - Speculation on various actors who have never played Holmes and how they'd do in the role

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

I hope we haven't offended anyone...and that they're just busy...but we've not recieved a lot of e-mail over the last six weeks, even from our regulars. If we've done something to upset y'all, please let us know...but we miss hearing from you guys!

All info on this week's show was taken from the various articles on Wikipedia about Sherlock Holmes, so i'm not even going to go into the individual stuff here...just go over there and type "Sherlock Holmes" into their search box...you'll be glad you did.
