MOVIE REVIEW: "Fierce People" a hidden masterpiece for too long

Fierce_people_ver2_poster1 FIERCE PEOPLE

RATED: R

STARS: ANTON YELCHIN, DIANE LANE, DONALD SUTHERLAND, CHRIS EVANS, KRISTEN STEWART, PAZ DE LA HUERTA,  ELIZABETH PERKINS,  CHRISTOPHER SHYER, AARON BROOKS, BLU MANKUMA

DIRECTOR: GRIFFIN DUNNE

********

Fierce People has taken a long, roundabout road to the big screen. Filmed in 2004, and having premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, it has been thisclose to release several times since then, only to be scuttled at the last minute. This time, more than two years after it's initial showing at Tribeca, it's finally been released.

It was WELL WORTH the interminable wait.

Fierce People follows the story of Finn Earl (Yelchin), a fifteen year old living with his coke-head mother in New York. He is planning to spend the summer of 1980 with the anthropologist father he's never met, observing the Yanomani people. But when Finn gets busted while making a score for his mother, Mom Liz (Lane) decides it's time she straighten out her life, and her son's life. She calls an old friend, Ogden Osbourne (Sutherland), who owns his own ten square mile city-state in New Jersey, and faster than Finn knows what's happening, he and mom are off to live on Osbourne's estate.

Finn is convinced that his masseuse mother and Osbourne are getting it on, and so are all the residents of Vlyvalle. But, as he says in the voiceovers that are actually letters to his father, just because he can't join his father in South America doesn't mean he can't make a study of the natives of this detached country-within-a-country.

Finn quickly makes friends with Osbourne's grandson, Bryce (Evans), by saving him from his searching, drunk mother, and also makes friends with the granddaughter, Maya (Stewart) after being caught in one of her bear traps that are meant for poachers on the estate, and his relationship with her quickly grows to something more than just friends.

As Finn begins to adjust to his surroundings and make friends with the natives, he also discovers the truth about how his mother and Mr. Osbourne became friends. In the process, he's befriended and even given a job by Mr. Osbourne, who reveals exactly WHY he and Finn's mother can't be lovers, making Finn respect Mr. Osbourne even more.

Finn finally begins to feel at ease about his mother's recovery and his own new life and friends. More importantly, his feelings of acceptance by Mr. Osbourne and his rich friends as one of "the tribe" as Bryce calls it, make him finally feel at home and at east. Then, an incident while walking to his home on the grounds late one evening, and its brutal and cruel nature, leaves the once smartalecky Finn emotionally shattered, physically devastated, his innocence and trust forever voided, and determined not to leave, despite his mother's frantic wishes, until he finds out who was responsible for the incident, and more importantly, why it happened.

Why this movie has taken so long to reach the screen is beyond me, because without a doubt, Fierce People features some of the finest performances of this, or any other, year. Without a doubt, this movie belongs to young Yelchin. Just 15 when the movie was shot, he turns in a fun, bouncy, and ultimately emotionally charged performance as the films' protagonist, Finn. Diane Lane, as Finn's frazzled and sometimes unstable mother Liz, hasn't delivered a performance this electric in years - the chemistry flows between Lane, Yelchin and Donald Sutherland as Osbourne.  Chris Evans, best known as Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four movies, turns in a fantastic performance as Osbourne grandson Bryce, who becomes one of Finn's first friends, a 20-something man who lives for the approval of his grandfather. And Kristen Stewart is fantastic as Maya, a girl who is discovering who she is, and her sexuality, just as Finn arrives on the scene.

On a personal level, I was not even sure I was interested in this movie, save for the fact that I had heard Yelchin's performance was amazing. So we took a chance on it, and I'm REALLY glad we did. I was completely absorbed and the story was absolutely fantastic. Actor/Director Griffin Dunne has made a masterpiece with this film. The lush, green estate sets are undeniably beautiful, and wonderfully filmed.

Because of its style, its substance, and its writing, but most importantly, its HEART, Fierce People has already grabbed one of those elusive spots on my all time favorites list, the third film to do so this year. And like Wristcutters:A Love Story before it, Fierce People grabs your throat, wraps itself around your heart, and then won't let go. It's a movie you'll remember with fondness, and you'll be telling everyone you run into to see it.

Fierce People is a CAN'T MISS movie. Seek it out at your local theater....you'll be "fiercely" glad you did!!!

MY SCORE: 5 (OUT OF 5)

Subject:CINEMA #74 - "Underrated Incorporated"

This week, by request from listeners, we name another dozen movies we thought were underrated - movies that didn't really get a fair shake, from the critics, the public, or both!

THE SHOW: Kim and TC reveal their dozen Underrated picks for this installment of underated movies, and try to give you reasons why you should check them out. Also, TC reviews Julie Taymor's "Across The Universe", the usual stuff - Email, Bonehead Of The Week, poll results - and coverage of this past week's National Amusements "Attack Of the B-Movies" series.

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

I'll have some more notes, and the video clip mentioned in the e-mail, up later this evening. Of course I always say that and sometimes it's a week or two later, but I PROMISE they'll be up by early Monday Morning at the latest this time!

Subject:CINEMA #73 - "They Cast WHO as WHAT?!?"

On this month's midweek edition, Kim and TC delve into the world of inexplicable casting , from John Wayne as Genghis Khan to Arnold Schwartzenegger as Mr. Freeze, and everyone in-between!

The Show: Lots of speculation about various casting coups, so to speak, ranging from the ridiculous as listed above, to people completely wrong for the part as written, to how they change casting when making a hit movie into a TV show. Plus, Attack Of The B Movies and our review of "The King Of Kong"!

More show notes this weekend - and thanks for listening!

TRAILER TROVE - "Attack Of The B-Movies" edition!

National Amusements is launching its second series of "Attack Of The B Movies" shows this week in 20 locations in the northeast and midwest US, so we thought we'd spotlight some of the movies they will be running over each week.

The charter theaters that launched the first series will be ahead of the additional 15 theaters where the series is launching, so there are actually two different series running.

If you're taking in the show in one of the five original theaters - Showcase Cinemas in Revere MA, Randolph MA, Lowell MA, West Springfield MA, and Warwick RI, you will be seeing the classic British remake of the painful Japanese film Gappa - the UK's version was called "Gorgo"..

Along with the second feature, "Teenagers From Outer Space"

If you're in the new group of 15 theaters showing the series, you're starting with the first group of movies, and you're in for a treat...if you can call Roger Corman's The Wasp Woman a treat...

Your second feature will be a piece of garbage called "Monster From Green Hell" starring Jim "Jock Ewing" Davis...

Those of us who enjoy B Movies have been having a field day, and thank you to National Amusements for coming up with this nifty idea!

More "Attack Of The B-Movies!" trailers next week!

National Amusements brings back "Attack Of The B-Movies" for another go-round

National Amusements is launching another series of Attack Of The B-Movies this Thursday, September 20th.

The original series, which ran in August in five of National Amusement's flagship Showcase Cinemas locations in MA and RI, proved to be so successful that the series is being expanded to 20 theaters in 8 states. Just goes to show you that some people (like us!) are gluttons for punishment when it comes to bad 50s movies...

The shows run on Thursday evenings and generally start at 7 PM. At just $5 per person for two movies, it's a real fun bargain.

The original five theaters - Showcase Cinemas locations in Revere, Randolph, Lowell, and West Springfield MA and Warwick RI - will be showing the second series of six movies:

Gorgo / Teenagers from Outer Space
Date: 9/20/2007

Giant from the Unknown / She Demons
Date: 9/27/2007

They Came From Beyond Space / Killers from Space
Date: 10/4/2007

Ring of Terror / Indestructible Man
Date: 10/11/2007

The Killer Shrews / Dementia 13
Date: 10/18/2007

The Little Shop of Horrors / Tormented
Date: 10/25/2007

If you're in one of the 15 new locations, you will be treated to the first series of movies that wowed the original five theaters:

The Wasp Woman/ Monster from Green Hell
Date: 9/20/2007

The Giant Gila Monster / Gammera the Invincible
Date: 9/27/2007

The Brain That Wouldn't Die / Screaming Skull
Date: 10/4/2007

Attack of the Giant Leeches / Monster from a Prehistoric Planet
Date: 10/11/2007

The Terror / House on Haunted Hill
Date: 10/18/2007

The Last Man on Earth / Devil Girl From Mars
Date: 10/25/2007

You can click on the "Attack of The B Movies" button on the right sidebar to find a list of theaters and which series your area might be showing. And hopefully, the series will continue to grow and expand with each new group of movies!

And as last time, we'll have complete coverage of the series each week on Subject:CINEMA! If you're in the Revere MA area, be sure to look us up - at least one of us (and possibly both) will have a "Subject:CINEMA" tee shirt on for sure, so we'll be easy to find in the crowd, and we usually sit down towards the lower part of the upper level. So be sure to look for us!

We'll see you in B-Movie land this Thursday! And watch for our weekly Trailer Trove feature, where we'll bring you some trailers from the series each week for the next six weeks!

Subject:CINEMA #72 - "From Paint To Pigment - The Live Action Cartoons!"

This week, Kim and TC take a look at the cartoons that have come to the big screen as live action movies.

The Show:

We discuss lots of cartoons that have made the transition to live action feature, including Transformers, Masters Of The Universe, Thunderbirds, and over a dozen more movies! Plus, our usual features - E-Mail, Bonehead, the Callback - and the debut of our latest new weekly segment, Cheese and Whine. Plus a few odds and ends.

THIS WEEK'S NOTES:

I'm sorry for the lack of postings this week - even though I was on vacation from my job, and was doing plenty of behind-the-scenes stuff for the blog, I didnt' get a lot posted. I had hoped to get a lot more done than I did, but MySpace has been a pain, which I went into in this week's Callback, so I won't repeat myself here.

Plus, on Friday I began redoing the podcast studio, and it didnt' get done until late Saturday - I thought i could do it in four hours or so - it ended up taking around FOURTEEN hours altogether, so that screwed things up too.

Hopefully things will be getting back to normal as the next week progresses...

This Thursday, "THEY CAST WHO AS WHAT?" and next Sunday, "UNDERRATED INCORPORATED", so be sure to check them out!

TRAILER TROVE - Remembering 9/11

On this sixth anniversary of the most horrific terrorist attack in history, some people seem to have forgotten WHY the U.S. is the way it is when it comes to our work in the middle east to bring down terrorism.  Here are two reasons that we hope will remind everyone WHY it is absolutely CRITICAL we win the war on terror...2,974 innocent people died six years ago today.  They were people who had lives that they never dreamed would be cut short in such a brutal and terrifying way. And we must NEVER, EVER let this kind of thing happen again on our soil.

To the work of the FDNY and NYPD, a reminder of what they had to deal with, and the job they faced with undeniable courage, even though many of them knew it could mean the end of their own lives...Oliver Stone's World Trade Center

To all those innocent people who boarded planes heading off on business, family trips, or returning home to loved ones, here is the true tribute to 44 of those people who gave their lives to try and save others targeted by the terrorists by fighting back...and one of TC's Top 10 Personal Pantheon movies...here are both trailers for Paul Greengrass' United 93

Our thoughts and prayers will always be with those who lost their lives on that horrible day six years ago, and with the loved ones they left behind as well. Let us never again have to endure such pain and heartbreak again...and let us NEVER forget WHY we are fighting to help make the world a safer place...

OK, political statements over...back to business as usual tomorrow....:-)

PNR MetroBoston Summer Tour 2007 - Kendall Square earns its rep as one of the top theaters in the area

Img_0040

Landmark Kendall Square Cinema
Cambridge MA
Thursday, August 30 2007

Year in and year out, Landmark's Kendall Square Cinema has won the annual award as Best Boston Theater in the Boston Phoenix newspaper. I've always suspected that the wins had more to do with the fact that the Kendall is an "art house" theater, catering to smaller independent films, and that the college crowd that is the Phoenix' primary audience did most of the voting. However, there's also something to the fact that it's a nice theater too. We'd been there a couple times prior to this past Thursday, when we stopped by to take in the independent Donkey Kong documentary, The King Of Kong (see earlier review).

Located at One Kendall Square in Cambridge, it's a bit of a hike from the nearest T Stop, MIT/Kendall, but on a nice day, it's not a bad walk at all, about 10-15 minutes.

The lobby of the Kendall is set up so you can buy tickets from the outside or the inside, but I'm not sure if they use the outside window or not - we've always gone inside. And what a pleasant surprise to discover that they do have ticket kiosks as well - and they're ALL working - a first on the entire Summer Tour. Pity they're halfway inside the lobby and kind of tucked behind some of the beautiful art deco design of the building, so you don't know you're there until it's too late if you're a first timer. A sign pointing them out would be helpful.

The concession stand and ticket booth were both manned by extremely friendly and helpful employees. The ticket attendant answered an extra question I had about an upcoming feature without missing a beat and with a smile on his face, and the concession stand attendant was pleasant and helpful, and made sure we got top service. I can also say that the Kendall has some of the best popcorn in Boston; it was fresh, hot, buttery, and delicious.

Built in 1997, before the stadium-style seating got really popular, the Kendall is the only newer theater in the area still sporting the slightly angled, 'hallway'-esque theaters. Kim has said that they remind her of aircraft hangars, because they're a bit wider that most of these types of theaters, but are about half the size lengthwise. Despite this, the Kendall is a great place to experience a film - the theater seats are comfortable, the angle to the screen is always neck-friendly, and the sound is always rich and full. And they keep them virtually spotless. It was a little chilly after a while, but overall, nothing major to quibble with.

The bathrooms were busy and still in decent shape - all the facilities were in perfect working order and clean as they could be. The sink area was a bit wet, but four people were in there ahead of me, so that most likely had just happened. The Kendall has an elevator to the upstairs bathrooms as well, and it was in excellent working order, taking just about 30 seconds to go between floors. Very nice indeed for someone with a bad back and bad knees like me.

One other thing I love about the Kendall is the sheer volumes of flyers, postcards, mini-posters, and other odd promo items they have laying around for the public to pick up. I was a bit disappointed that they were out of the most recent Landmark Magazine, but it came out in June, so it's definately understandable. And naturally, I forgot to ask if there was a manager around to ask if we could have left some of our cards, but I have a feeling they won't have a problem with it when I finally remember next time we go...

THE SCORES: (all are out of 5)

Lobby - 5
Snack Bar - 5
Theater Cleanliness - 5
Theater Temperature - 4
Comfy Factor - 5
Film Quality - 5
Sound Quality - 5
Bathrooms - 4
Employees - 5
Ticket Kiosks - 4
---------------------
TOTAL SCORE: 47 out of 50 - Excellent

And with that, the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge has become our highest-scoring theater on our tour so far. So obviously there IS something to the Phoenix voting after all. If you are into the independent scene, you'll be spending quite a bit of time here, and if your experience is anything like ours, you can bet you'll be pretty happy giving them your business as well.

We'll have a review of another MetroBoston Theater on our PNR Summer Tour 2007 coming soon!  And don't forget to check back frequently, and on our weekly podcast Subject:CINEMA, for more PNR MetroBoston Summer Tour 07 coverage!
